Frequently asked questions
What does the USDOT check show?
USDOT status and out-of-service orders, operating authority on each MC, FF or MX number, insurance on file with FMCSA (insurer, BI&PD limit, effective date), BOC-3, the date of the last MCS-150, roadside inspections and out-of-service results for 24 months, crashes and the BASIC summary from public SMS data. Every line shows its source and data date.
Where does the data come from, and why can it differ from SAFER?
From public FMCSA data: the QCMobile API and the Motus, Census, SMS and Out of Service Orders data sets on data.transportation.gov. They update at different times, and since May 14, 2026, FMCSA registration runs through its new Motus system, so the data may lag and the sources may disagree. The official record is the SAFER Company Snapshot and the company page in Motus.
Do I need a service company to file with FMCSA?
No. A carrier can file with FMCSA in Motus on its own and then pays only government fees. SafeBridge and TruckerNavi are private companies, not FMCSA and not a government agency.
My authority is inactive. How do I get it back?
A request to reinstate revoked authority is filed in Motus, and FMCSA charges $80 for it. It needs an active insurance filing, a BOC-3 and an active USDOT: while the USDOT is inactive or under an out-of-service order, FMCSA does not accept the request. If the authority application was dismissed, the $80 reinstatement does not apply: a new application is filed with a $300 fee for each type of authority. You can do it yourself or through TruckerNavi.
What does an MCS-150 older than 24 months mean?
The MCS-150 is updated every 24 months (the biennial update) in Motus, and FMCSA charges no fee for it. While Motus is being stabilized, FMCSA has temporarily suspended enforcement of biennial updates and the inactivation of USDOT numbers for carriers whose update came due on June 1, 2026 or later; FMCSA has not announced an end date. The duty to update remains.
Do I have to buy insurance from SafeBridge to use this check or TruckerNavi services?
